There aren’t any more state-ranked teams on the schedule the rest of the regular season for Humble.
Thank goodness.
Playing in the toughest Class 6A district in Texas hasn’t been pretty for the Wildcats.
And against No. 8 Summer Creek, a state-semifinalist in Division II last year, it was much of the same on a bright and sunny afternoon at Turner Stadium. The Bulldogs pulled way ahead earlier to win 48-17.
The host Bulldogs (7-1, 4-1), who have won three straight games, have their work cut out for them the next two weeks against a Kingwood team fighting for a playoff spot in District 23-6A, followed by No. 2 North Shore in Week 11.
Humble (4-4, 1-4) has dropped three straight games, but there’s still plenty to play for over the final two weeks.
Summer Creek produced a frantic offense and a defense with brute force to start out. The Bulldogs led 45-0 at the break on their homecoming day.
With a running clock in the second half, Humble produced some theatrics with its special teams.
Against Summer Creek’s backups, the Wildcats made three stops to force a punt.
Senior Jalen Lolesio got his mitts on the the attempt as the ball was catapulted backwards to about the 15, where junior Darius Heard scooped it and brought it to paydirt to put the Wildcats on the board.
Humble then blocked Summer Creek again to close the next drive. Senior Patrick Long made a great run, got his body on it and junior Jamarion Patterson grabbed it and rolled inside the 5.
Humble couldn’t get much going on offense as the Bulldogs stopped them.
Ernesto Avila hammered a 43-yard field goal to add more points for the Wildcats.
Late in the fourth quarter, Humble senior McArthur Baker III caught a 17-yard pass from senior quarterback Tristian Bernard to convert a fourth-and-1.
Summer Creek is 8-3 all-time against Humble and has won five straight in the series.
The Wildcats have a real tight turnaround, but a winnable game on the agenda Halloween Night on Thursday.
Humble travels to Stallworth Stadium for the 7 p.m. kick against winless Goose Creek Memorial (0-8, 0-5). The Patriots fell 27-21 to Channelview on Friday night.
