The Conroe Tigers got out to a solid start to the season Friday evening.
On the road at Magnolia West for a non-district game, the Tigers pulled ahead to an eight-point lead at halftime and then outscored the Mustangs by 11 points in the third quarter for a 64-46 win.
In topping the Mustangs (0-1) – head coached by Conroe native Darcie Moore – the Tigers (1-0) won their season-opener for the first time since 2020.
Eleventh year Conroe head coach Tamisha Houston witnessed a balanced night of offense from her team as three players reached double figures.
Junior Riley Gross led all scorers with 16 points. She made 3-pointers in the first and third quarters, respectively, while also contributing in each quarter.
In her high school debut, freshman Kaleigh Phillips impressed with an 13-point game. Phillips heated up in the second half when she made five field goals.
Senior Alissa Sneed also had points in all four quarters. She had a pair of buckets each in the first and third quarters and totaled 11 on the night.
Sophomore Carley Boothe knocked down a 3-pointer in the second quarter and totaled nine points. Junior Taylor Smith chipped in with six points.
Conroe has its home opener 5 p.m. Tuesday against Lake Creek.
The Tigers then will rest up before hosting the 75th Lady Tigers Classic, which takes place Thursday-Saturday.
This year’s tournament features 32 teams from around Texas.
The Tigers will face Dekaney at noon on Thursday in the first round.
