The Dayton Broncos had seven players make All-District 8-5A Division II teams and seven more recognized as honorable mentions as the eight-team league released its postseason awards over the weekend.
Dayton, which finished the season 4-6 with a 2-5 mark in district play, was led by two first-team selections on the defensive side of the ball.
Senior outside linebacker Andrew Soliz was recognized as a first team selection, as was junior safety Rakin Akmal.
Soliz totaled a career-high 109 tackles during the season and had 16 sacks, one of the top performers in Texas in that category. Soliz had a sack in nine out of 10 games.
Akmal was second on the team in tackles with 125 on the season, 12 of which were for loss. He had two sacks and two fumble recoveries.
On the second-team defense was senior defensive back Azrae Beechem.
Second-team offense featured four Broncos and were headlined by senior running back Jaleel Kendrick, who had a breakout season. Offensive tackle Donahvan Thibodeaux, offensive guard Tyler Chavez and wide receiver Braeden White also made the second team.
Honorable mentions for Dayton included seniors Emilio Villa (offensive line), Angelo Hadley (offensive/defensive line), Josh Spiller (offensive line), Marcus James (tight end), Devin Tanner (defensive/offensive line), Aaron Wright (defensive back/wide receiver) and junior Colton Havard (defensive back).
The top two awards in the district were split by offensive talents from the westside of Montgomery County.
Lake Creek senior running back Tyvonn Byars, a Rice signee, and Montgomery senior quarterback Reggie Williams split the award.
The Offensive Most Valuable Player went to Nederland senior running back Hubert Thomas. The Defensive MVP went to Port Neches-Groves senior Mason Wuenschel.
Huntsville claimed both Newcomer awards with freshman quarterback/running back Zay Adolphe recognized on offense and junior Sam Cleveland recognized on defense. Huntsville also had the Special Teams MVP in senior returner Braylon Phelps.
PNG head coach Jeff Joseph, the 2023 state champion leader of the Indians, was Coach of the Year.
