Conroe took up residency in the paint at Cleveland Friday night and put on a dominant performance to get back on track in District 13-6A.
Three Tiger post players reached double-digit scoring – two of which had season highs – in a 66-20 victory over the Indians.
Conroe (9-7, 2-3) matched its season-high in points scored while the defense put on another strong performance. With a 3-1 record over the past four games, Conroe has allowed just 24.2 points per game.
Cleveland is winless on the season at 0-15 and 0-5 in district play. The Indians are 0-5 against Conroe since moving up to Class 6A in 2022.
After a sluggish night Tuesday at Oak Ridge where the Tigers fell late 37-32, it was all Tigers in this one.
Conroe outpaced Cleveland 24-2 in the second quarter for a 38-8 halftime lead.
After a scoreless first quarter, the night’s scoring leader Taylor Smith scored 10 points in the second quarter. After a quieter third quarter with a pair of free throws, the junior totaled eight points in the fourth to finish with 20 points, a season-high. Smith previously had 13 points in games against Fort Bend Tompkins and Liberty last month.
Fellow junior Riley Gross spread out 15 points over four quarters. Gross began the season with three straight double-digit performances, but had reached 10-plus since Nov. 7 against Dekaney.
Freshman Christy Rogers put in a high-school career-high 17 points as she scored all but four in the middle quarters. Rogers had 18 total points coming into the night.
Freshman Kayleih Phillips totaled six points – all in the first half – while senior Alisa Sneed had four points.
Conroe is back in action Tuesday night at home against first-place Grand Oaks.
