Conroe has seen some inconsistencies when it comes to its offense this season.
So when it came time to play against a team with its own struggles in Cleveland, Saturday afternoon was a good opportunity to get into a groove.
The Tigers did that as they took down the winless Indians 78-23 in District 13-6A.
Conroe (12-9, 5-5) evened its district record for the second straight Saturday. It dropped a game below .500 three nights ago at The Woodlands in a 55-50 loss after topping the Caney Creek Panthers seven days ago.
Ten out of eleven Tigers scored against the Indians (0-24, 0-10) with three in double digits, one with nine, two with eight and two with seven points.
The 78 points scored is a new season-high.
“Before the game, I told the girls that we needed to prove to ourselves that we can put the ball in the hole,” Conroe coach Tamisha Houston said. “Prove to ourselves, prove to me, prove to yourself, prove to your family and friends that you can score. We’ve been struggling to score. We need to score points.”
Christy Rogers made her first start and had at it against a Cleveland team who she scored a varsity-high 15 points in a 66-20 win on Dec. 13.
The freshman netted nine of the Tigers 20 first-quarter points as she made her first career start.
Rogers has pieced together a couple strong outings as of late as she continues to adjust to high school ball at the highest level.
Houston said that Rogers is still coming into her own after having a size advantage just a year ago against junior high kids.
“Christy is a kid that has a lot of upside,” Houston said. “We’re just trying to get her to have a short memory and stop continuing to dwell on the bad things that happen. She’s one of those kids that doesn’t like to miss and that she should hit every close shot.”
For the third straight game in 2025, senior Alisa Sneed led the Tigers in scoring. After netting 14 at The Woodlands on Wednesday, the point guard and Texas softball recruit had 12 against the Indians.
Conroe’s third double-digit scorer was sophomore Maliyah Harrison, who scored 10 points, including a pair of 3s. Harrison began the third quarter with a triple and then a bucket underneath on the next trip down. It was her best outing since scoring 14 against Brazosport in early December.
Sophomore Carly Boothe totaled nine points while junior Taylor Smith and sophomore Lisa Jacques each had eight apiece. Freshman Kayleigh Phillips finished with seven points.
“I hope this was a confidence-builder for most of them,” Houston said. “I know it was a confidence-builder for some of them just to see the ball go through the hoop.”
Freshman Everly Cumpian made her varsity debut by knocking down a corner 3-pointer in the second quarter and adding four more points in the fourth quarter. Although not a permanent varsity member, Houston sees a big future in the guard. The coaching staff agreed that Saturday was a good day to pull her up.
“She’s a freshman,” Houston said. “Everly is talented enough to play on the varsity. Early on in the year, I just didn’t know if I’d have a spot for her. I also felt that she was going to be able to dominate at the freshmen level and continue to develop and evolve her game.”
Conroe will return to the floor 6:30 p.m. Wednesday with a more formidable foe in College Park.
It’ll be another big test for a Tigers team that will need to start making some moves toward a playoff spot.
College Park, which started the week in second place, beat Conroe 37-34 in the district opener all the way back on Nov. 19.
“We couldn’t score the ball,” Houston said. “It’s one of those that maybe since we were able to see the ball go through the hoop in our own gym that it will carry over to Wednesday.”
Conroe’s five district losses have come at a combined 19 points. Expect the meeting with College Park to be another close one.
“They are going to be disciplined and play hard,” Houston said of the Cavaliers. “They have some kids who can knock down shots. We’re going to have to make sure that we are ready for them defensively and we’re also going to have to make sure that we can take care of us.”
