Kingwood pours it on Spring with 15 runs in opener

Concerned by the rain forecast 24 hours later, Kingwood poured it on Spring Monday evening under cloudy skies.

The reigning state semifinalists in Class 6A brought the boom with a pair of homers, 16 hits and their pitchers were near-perfect over four innings in a 15-0 non-district win over the Lions to start the regular season.

The game between the Mustangs (1-0) and Lions (0-1) was originally scheduled for Tuesday night.

Kingwood, which smacked 58 homers a year ago, started the season out with dingers by Stanford signee Addyson Sheppard and Leilani Garcia.

The Mustangs also had nine extra-base hits. Frei Pizzaro had two out of the team’s six doubles. Hunter Quentel, McKenna Holm and Kayla Macicek also doubled while Mia Chaires had a double and a triple. Kendall Yates also provided a triple.

Garcia led with three RBIs while Sheppard and Chaires each drove in two runs. Yates was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

In the circle, Quentel went the first three innings without allowing a hit. She struck out eight. Yates went the final inning with one walk allowed.

Kingwood returns to action Thursday-Saturday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Bryan/College Station.
