Splendora snaps Dayton’s streak with 7-4 win

The winning streak ended Tuesday night for the Dayton Broncos.

Splendora scored twice in the top of the fifth to take the lead and twice more in the seventh to put it out of reach as the Wildcats defeated Dayton 7-4 in Game of the District 18-5A series this week.

Dayton (10-12, 3-2) had won five straight games, including three straight in district play and swept Porter last week.

Splendora (14-6, 5-2) had lost two of three coming into the week.

The Wildcats struck first against Dayton starter Hunter Wallace with two runs in the top of the first.

Dayton responded in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back run-producing singles by Sebastian Avila and Andrew Soliz.

A Zak Wood sacrifice fly and an Anthony Zuniga run on a passed ball put the Broncos up 4-2 in the second.

But that was the last of the run production as Dayton totaled two hits, led by Zuniga with two singles and Ivan Lopez was 2-for-4.

Wallace kept his team in it for six innings. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits. The junior struck out eight while walking two. Braden Gutierrez pitched the final inning with two unearned runs allowed. He gave up a hit, walked three, and had one strikeout.

Game 2 of the series shifts to Splendora Friday night.
