Dayton’s season opener Monday afternoon didn’t go to plan. But to be fair, they tested themselves with one of Texas’ best Class 5A teams in recent years.
The Eagles were state champions just four years ago and 20-game winners each of the past two years. They held firm at home as two pitchers didn’t allow a hit heading into the sixth inning in a 7-0 over the Broncos.
Dayton’s Kyler Moreau broke up the no-hit bid with a line drive single to lead off the sixth inning. Moreau proved to be the Broncos’ lone base runner on the afternoon.
BridgerThomas and Ayden Mooring combined on five innings and struck out three. Jorge Garza allowed the first and only hit of the game. He struck out five over two innings.
Dayton starter Hunter Wallace settled in for five innings. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits allowed. The Broncos made three errors behind him as the junior struck out two and walked two. Landon Curry walked two but didn’t allow a hit or run otherwise in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Dayton will load up games Thursday-Saturday as it plays at the Humble ISD Tournament. The Broncos play C.E. King at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Kingwood High School before moving south to Summer Creek High School to play Marshall at 5:30 p.m.
