Chavez on point again, Magnolia tops Tomball Memorial

Keegan Chavez has been on point in Magnolia’s District 15-6A games so far this season.

Chavez started on the mound for the third straight time against a league foe and earned another victory. The senior also provided some punch at the plate.

The Bulldogs took a 10-3 road win Tuesday night at Tomball Memorial.

Magnolia (10-4-1, 3-0) earned its 10th win of the season and remains unbeaten in district play. Tomball Memorial (8-6-1, 0-1) was making its district debut after a bye last week. The Wildcats went 3-1 in a tournament they played late last week.

Chavez, the 6-foot-7 San Jacinto College recruit, picked up wins the past two weeks over Klein Oak and went 3⅓ innings this time. He struck out six, allowed three hits and two free passes as the Bulldogs built a 5-2 lead through two innings for him.

That included a solo homer of his own, which gave Magnolia the lead for good at 3-2 to open the second inning.

The Bulldogs flexed muscle all night as Ian Pugh and Clyde Williams also homered.

Pugh was 2-for-4 with a co-team-high three RBIs. Williams also drove in three runs.

Chase Lowery and Jhett Bubke, who doubled, also drove in runs for Magnolia.

Jordan Enyart and Williams Bates also added doubles.

Lowery, Bates and MJ Watson each stole a base.

In relief of Chavez, Braylon Hobbie pitched a steady 1⅔ innings of relief. He didn’t allow a run while striking out two. Aiden Luscombe went the final two innings with four strikeouts. He allowed an earned run while giving up three hits and two walks.

Game 2 of the series shifts to Magnolia at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Magnolia is 7-3 all-time against Tomball Memorial heading into it.
