It started on a dramatic win and ended on a dominant win. That’s how Dayton will sum up this year’s Huffman-Hargrave Tournament.
On Saturday, Sebastian Avila pitched a complete-game shutout as the Broncos beat New Waverly 3-0.
The Broncos (4-6) went 2-2 on the tournament, which started Thursday with an extra-innings win over Angleton.
Against the Bulldogs, Avila was huge.
The junior struck out six and allowed just two singles over seven innings. He walked three.
At the plate, Avila was 2-for-2.
Leadoff man Anthony Zuniga was 2-for-4 with two doubles. He drove in two runs on one of those doubles in a three-run fourth inning for the Broncos.
Ivan Lopez also totaled two hits and Braden Gutierrez had an RBI.
Friday’s game
The Broncos had Huffman in reach Friday evening. The host pulled away, however.
Dayton tied the Falcons with four runs in top fifth and then tied the game again in the sixth.
Huffman used five runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 11-6.
Dayton punched out nine hits with Manny Castillo coming through with his first homer of the season during the fifth-inning rally which tied the game at 5-all.
Castillo’s blast came on the heels of a two-run line drive single to right by Avila, which scored Landon Strickland and Andrew Soliz.
Castillo matched Avila’s two RBIs to co-lead the Broncos. Ivan Lopez and Blake Sigle also drove in runs. Lopez and Kyler Moreau each had a double while Zuniga was 2-for-5.
