It took until the eighth inning for the Deer Park offense fuse to be lit.
Once it was lit, it exploded.
The District 24-6A game at Dickinson was tied 1-1 through seven innings. The Deer then piled up six runs in the eighth for a 7-2 win over the Gators.
The victory wraps up the first half of district play for the Deer (16-5, 6-1), which is ranked No. 24 this week by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Deer Park has won 11 of 12.
Journey Calderon made it 1-0 in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly which scored Kayla Barras.
Dickinson (6-14, 3-4) tied the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh to send it to extra innings.
Mariah Ramirez started the Deer Park rally in the eighth with a lead-off triple. Calderon added another RBI sacrifice fly, Caitlyn Wade tripled in a run, Camryn Plocheck drove in a run on a single, Izzy Mendoza hit a two-run triple and Zoie Powell drove in a run on a ground out to pull away.
Ramirez was 2-for-3 as the only multi-hit player on the Deer.
Madi Alvarado went all out in the circle. The senior pitched all eight innings in the circle and both runs were unearned. She struck out six and gave up seven hits. Alvarado didn’t walk anyone.
Deer Park returns home Friday to play Clear Falls.
