Grand Oaks carries momentum, defeats Caney Creek 11-0

Don’t believe in momentum?

Grand Oaks demonstrated that it exists Saturday afternoon.

After a dramatic extra-innings win over Willis about 14 hours earlier, the Grizzlies returned to the field at Caney Creek and bagged another District 13-6A win, 11-0, in five innings.

It’s the first winning streak for the Grizzlies (15-5, 5-3) since beating Santa Fe and College Park in back-to-back games three weeks ago.

Caney Creek (5-13, 2-6) has had a troublesome stretch of games since beating College Park March 11. The Panthers have now dropped three straight by a combined score of 39-1, including a 17-1 loss to Oak Ridge Friday night.

Leading the Grand Oaks charge was senior Katelynn Torres, who went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Torres also pitched three innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts. She walked just one.

Kiley Milligan totaled a team high three RBIs.

Friday night’s walk-off hero Ava Butler went 2-for-3, including a double and a triple. Butler scored three runs and had one RBI. Her RBI single against Willis won the game 5-4 in the eighth inning.

Larissa Tavares and Mayce Burkett each drove in a run for the Grizzlies. Tavares and Lilo Wright, who doubled, each scored two runs.

Kat Mack pitched two shutout innings in relief of Torres. The junior struck out one, walked one and gave up one hit.

The second round of district play begins Tuesday as the Grizzlies travel to The Woodlands at 6:15 p.m.
