Grand Oaks goes 4-2 at Southeast Texas Invitational

Grand Oaks finished the Southeast Texas Invitational with a solid outing in the circle by junior Kat Mack.

After the Grizzlies fell to Huffman-Hargrave 3-1 earlier Saturday, Mack pitched a complete-game in a 4-2 victory over Santa Fe.

Grand Oaks finished the tournament 4-2.

Mack struck out three while allowing two earned runs on seven hits over six innings. 

She was supported by her teammates at the plate early as Grand Oaks (12-2) scored all four runs in the first three innings.

Kiley Milligan and Ava Butler – both having strong tournaments – each had an RBI double. Amira Abukhzam also doubled on a 2-for-2 game against the Falcons. Mayce Burkett also had two hits and Julia Veilleux had an RBI.

Earlier against Huffman, Kaitlynn Torres pitched 5⅓ innings and doubled at the plate. Burkett was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Friday’s games

Grand Oaks began the second day of the tournament with a signature 8-7 win over host Liberty, a Class 4A power that has reached state four consecutive years with its last state title coming in 2022. 

The Grizzlies were then matched up with District 13-6A foe Conroe and fell for the first time this season, 10-6.

Against Liberty, Torres went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. Milligan added two RBIs and Butler homered on a 2-for-3 game. Butler, Lilo Wright and Torres each scored two runs and Veilleux doubled.

Victoria Hernandez went four innings with five earned runs allowed while Mack went the rest of the way with one earned run. Liberty totaled nine hits.

In a five-inning game, Conroe scored nine times over the third and fourth innings to pull away from Grand Oaks.

Milligan and Wright both homered for Grand Oaks. Wright led the team with two RBIs and had two hits.

Butler was 2-for-3 with a double.

Mack, Torres and Sage Oglesby also doubled. Oglesby, Burkett and Milligan had one RBI.

Thursday’s games

Grand Oaks started off the tournament feisty with blowout wins over Brenham (10-6) and Hardin-Jefferson (15-4)

The Grizzlies totaled four homers on the day, led by Butler with two in the opener against the Cubs. She was 2-for-3 with five RBIs.

Torres, the starter in the circle, also homered and scored two runs. The senior went 4⅓ innings with four strikeouts, four hits, three walks and one unearned run.

Abukhzam, Kennedy, Lemons and Wright each doubled. Ynostra had two RBIs while Wright and Lemons each had one.

Mack hit a grand slam in the Hardin-Jefferson game as the Grizzlies improved to 10-0 at the time. She totaled six RBIs on the day as Grand Oaks scored 14 runs over the first two innings.

Butler and Milligan had two RBIs apiece while Tavares and Burkett had one RBI.

Tavares doubled twice while Butler and Wright also doubled.

Mack and Lemons combined on three innings of work. Hardin-Jefferson had three earned runs.

Up next

It’s back to District 13-6A play for the Grizzlies as they host College Park at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. Grand Oaks is 2-0 in district play.
