Grizzlies suffer first 13-6A setback at New Caney

Just two teams entered Friday unbeaten in District 13-6A softball.

With one big third inning rally and just enough to hold Grand Oaks back in the seventh, New Caney is now alone atop the standings.

The Eagles held firm on their home field for a 6-4 win over the Grizzlies.

Grand Oaks (13-3, 3-1) was held to five hits and were gifted four errors by the Eagles (12-6-1, 3-0).

Down 6-2 entering the final inning, Ella Brown doubled home Amira Abukhzam and Larissa Tavares knocked home Brown on a pop out in foul territory.

The Grizzlies brought the tying run to the plate two batters later and a groundout ended it.

New Caney has now beaten Conroe, Oak Ridge and the Grizzlies – three quality wins – to begin district play.

Kaitlyn Torres had an RBI at the plate and pitched 2⅔ innings. She allowed six runs, but only one was earned. The University of Houston recruit gave up four hits, walked three and struck out one.

Kat Mack went the final 3⅓ innings with two walks and a strikeout.

Kiley Milligan had one RBI.

Grand Oaks hosts Conroe Tuesday afternoon at 12:45 p.m. for a spring break matinee.
