Humble ran into another state-ranked District 23-6A buzzsaw Friday night.

From the visitor’s sideline this week at Turner Stadium, the Wildcats fell 53-3 to No. 5 Atascocita.

The Eagles (6-0, 3-0), also ranked No. 24 nationally by MaxPreps, allowed a season-low in points while coming up just one point shy of tying its season-high (54 against C.E. King on Sept. 26).

It’s back to the drawing board for Humble (4-2, 1-2), which has only lost to state-ranked teams this season (North Shore on Sept. 26).

The Wildcats trailed just 11-0 after the first quarter as the Eagles had a safety, a field goal and a touchdown with a missed two-point conversion over the first 12 minutes.

Atascocita ratcheted up that lead to 25-0 before Humble broke the shutout with one second left before halftime.

Senior Ernesto Avila booted his fourth field goal of the season to get the Wildcats on the board. It was a season-best 41-yarder as the Wildcats trailed 25-3 at halftime.

Atascocita, which has won nine of 10 dating back to last season, led 46-3 after three quarters and played mostly reserves in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Tristian Bernard was 6-for-9 for 54 yards. Stanley Deams led with five catches for 55 yards. McArthur Baker III rushed for 24 yards.

Johnny Smith led the Wildcats with eight tackles. Cayden Stanton, Demoy Carr, Jeffrey Tillotson and Patrick Long each had seven tackles apiece.

The Eagles have now won eight straight over Humble dating back to 2009.

Humble has a quick turnaround with a 7 p.m. home game Thursday with C.E. King (3-3, 1-2). It’s a big game as the Panthers come in off a lopsided loss to No. 8 Summer Creek, 53-7.

Positioning in the district standings will be up for grab as C.E. King took last year’s meeting in overtime.
