Journey to the end: Calderon hits walk-off homer to top Clear Lake

Deer Park’s unbeaten start in 24-6A and district winning streak that dates back to 2020 hung in the balance.

It was a Journey down to the end for the Deer Friday night.

Journey Calderon hit a two-run homer over the center field wall at Doll Field as the Deer rallied from 5-2 down to start the inning for a 7-5 victory over Clear Lake.

Deer Park (14-4, 4-0) extended its season-long winning streak to nine straight in the process.

Calderon was 2-for-4 for the night with a team-high four RBIs. She tripled an inning earlier to cut the deficit to two runs.

The Falcons led all night after scoring in the top of the first and it held a 2-0 lead from the third inning until the sixth.

Even after Calderon’s triple made it a one-run game, Clear Lake added two runs in the top of the seventh to extend its lead.

To start the bottom of the seventh, both Ava Garcia and Reily Hernandez drew walks.

An error off the bat of Kaya Barras scored Garcia to make it 5-3 with one out.

Two batters later with two outs, Mia Montemayor doubled to right to score Hernandez and Barras to tie the game. Harley Guarjardo pinch-ran for Montemayor, who was 3-for-4 on the night, and scored the winning run on Calderon’s blast.

Hernandez was 1-for-2 with a triple.

Madi Alvarado went 5 ⅓ innings with four strikeouts, five hits, two walks and one earned run allowed. Braelynn Jones took over in the sixth and went the rest of the way. Both runs allowed were unearned as the junior struck out three, walked one and gave up two hits.

The Deer came into Friday sizzling off a 24-7 win over Clear Brook. Calderon was a catalyst in that one as well with a double, triple and five RBIs. Montemayor doubled and homered while driving in four runs. Caitlyn Wade also had four RBIs.

Deer Park has another big district game on tap come Tuesday as it hosts Brazoswood.
