Kingwood emerges in the 5th to take down Dobie

Kingwood hadn’t played in 11 days, so don’t give them too much grief that it took a few innings to get cooking at the plate.

One big inning is all it took as the Mustangs served up a 4-0 non-district win over Pasadena Dobie Tuesday night.

Kingwood (6-0), ranked No. 4 in Class 6A, was hitless through four innings until McKenna Holm led off the bottom of the fifth with a single.

After a groundout, which moved Holm to second, and a strikeout, Addyson Sheppard homered to make it 2-0 and Leilani Garcia went back-to-back with a solo shot.

Setup with a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore ace Hunter Quentel helped herself at the plate with a solo homer.

Quentel dazzled in the circle with the complete-game shutout. She struck out 12 Longhorns and walked three while allowing three hits.

Kingwood scattered just four hits in its first game since Feb. 14 at the NFCA Texas Leadoff Classic. It is already the fourth shutout of the year for Kingwood.

The Mustangs were set to co-host the Humble ISD Tournament last week, but that was canceled due to extreme cold weather.

Kingwood head coach Christa Williams-Yates and assistant coach Christina Mata both played and won state championships at Dobie back in 1993 and 1995. Both were also teammates with current Dobie head coach Robin Rackley, making for quite the reunion.

Kingwood is back in action Thursday-Saturday at the Barbers Hill Invitational. The Mustangs play Keller at 8 a.m. Thursday and Dickinson at noon from the host site. Friday’s games against Brazoswood (11 a.m.) and Barbers Hill (3 p.m.) are also at the Eagles’ home field. On Saturday, Kingwood goes to Crosby to play the Cougars at 1 p.m.
