Kingwood hangs on over Summer Creek to get back in win column

Kingwood has taken on challenges left and right as of late.

After its first district loss in two years, the Mustangs faced a challenge in visiting Summer Creek Friday night in District 23-6A.

The Bulldogs battled back to within a run in the sixth inning, but couldn’t go any further as Kingwood hung on for a 4-3 win.

The Mustangs (15-2-1, 5-1) came in off a 6-2 loss at C.E. King Friday night. Summer Creek (15-3, 4-2) lost for the first time in four games. It hadn’t given up a run since a March 10 win over King.

Kingwood built a 3-0 lead through three innings.

Mia Gagliardi homered for the second time in as many weeks to set the tone in the first inning.

Addyson Sheppard then doubled in the third inning to score Abella Mata and Leilani Garcia added an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Kingwood added a much-needed insurance run in the fifth as Sheppard grounded out and Mata scored again.

The Mustangs were held to just three hits and one walk.

Sophomore Hunter Quentel struck out 12 in the complete-game win. All three Bulldog runs were unearned. She surrendered four hits and walked three.

Kingwood is back in action Tuesday at Humble to wrap up the first round of district play.
