Kingwood opened the second round of District 23-6A similarly to how it started the first round.
A home run onslaught combined with solid pitching.
On Friday, it was an 11-0 effort in five innings as the No. 15 Mustangs won their fourth straight game.
Kingwood (18-5, 7-1) beat the Patriots (17-8, 3-5) 15-0 back on March 4.
Hunter Quentel and Kendall Yates combined on the one-hit shutout. Quentel struck out eight in three innings with the lone hit allowed. She walked two. Yates went the final two innings with two strikeouts and two walks.
It was a great night at the plate as well for Quentel, who went 3-for-3 with two homers and four RBIs.
Kingwood had four total homers, nearly matching the five produced in the first meeting.
Addyson Sheppard also homered on a 2-for-3 game with two RBIs. Frei Pizzaro also joined the home run parade as she drove in two runs.
Mia Gagliardi was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
In the first meeting, Leilani Garcia homered twice while Sheppard, Quentel and Samantha Trzecki also left the park. Quentel didn’t allow a hit that night.
Kingwood’s next district game is Tuesday at North Shore.
Thursday’s game
Kingwood completed one game of the delayed Humble ISD Tournament, which was affected by cold weather back in February.
The Mustangs took care of College Station 9-1 Thursday morning. Their second game against Grand Oaks was called due to rain after two innings.
Against the Cougars, Sheppard and Garcia each homered twice.
Sheppard was 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs while Garcia was also 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBIs.
Gagliardi was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Quentel and Yates also had a double and an RBI, respectively.
Pizzaro pitched four innings with one earned run allowed. She struck out three, allowed four hits and walked two. Lyndsie Gilman picked up the last inning where she struck out two, but allowed two hits and a walk.
