Lake Creek has flourished this past month while running in the city of College Station.
After recent successes at the Cougar Relays and the Texas A&M Bluebonnet Relays, the Lions postseason began this week right up Highway 6 with the District 17-5A meet.
The Lions took home three individual golds, two relay golds, three silvers and three bronzes as they finished second with 141 points after Thursday night’s running finals.
College Station won the district title with 168 points while the Lions were 14 points better than third place A&M Consolidated with 127 points. Lake Creek is second place in the district meet for the fourth straight season.
Lake Creek has 13 individual area qualifiers, plus the two relays. The 17/18-5A area meet takes place this Wednesday at Splendora High School.
Lions senior Hailey Johnson can now claim three straight district championships in the 800-meter run. Johnson finished first in her final high school season with a time of 2:10.73. She won district golds as a junior and a sophomore while taking silver behind teammate Emma Little as a freshman in 2022.
Lake Creek junior Addie Micklos was second in 2:13.17, a new personal record in the event. She improved but a second over last year’s silver-medal finish behind Johnson. Micklos also qualified for area in 2023 with a fourth place finish.
Johnson added to her gold count later in the evening in the 1,600. The Oklahoma State recruit finished in 5:09.11, in front of Consol’s Rowen Skinner in 5:11.74. Lake Creek freshman Frankie Knox earned her first career area qualification with a fourth place finish in 5:14.18, 2.2 seconds ahead of fifth place.
Micklos, meanwhile, ran another personal record of 58.52 to finish fourth for the second straight season in the 400 and qualify for area.
After earning silvers in each of the last two district meets in the 100, Lake Creek senior Sydney Spikerman can now call herself a district champion in the event. Spikerman ran her first sub-12 second time at a district meet with an 11.93 finish. Last year Spikerman ran a 12.41 and she ran a 12.72 in 2023.
Junior Maggie Ogorchock also hit the podium and qualified for area with a third place finish of 12.06 in the 100.
Later in the evening, Spikerman qualified for area for the first time in the 200. The senior earned silver with a sprint of 24.91, just behind district champion Jada Stanford of Consol (24.52). Lake Creek sophomore Emma Fanghella came up just shy of an area qualifying run as she finished fifth (26.01), just behind College Station’s Ella Hawryluk (25.69).
Lake Creek will also have a hurdler at area next week as junior Jade Oravainen placed third in 16.32 of the 100.
For the third time in the past five days, the Lake Creek 4X200 ran a sub-1:40. In a gold-medal time of 1:39.64, Ashlynn England, Oravainen, Ogorchock and Spikerman blazed around the track. Last year’s Lion 4X200 finished fourth.
To cap the night, the 4X400 of Ogorchock, Oravainen, Micklos and Johnson won gold in 3:54.74, nearly six seconds ahead of College Station.
The Lions had admirable performances that fell just short of area. Senior Bella Eulitt finished fifth in the 3,200 (12:03.68). The 4X100 team of England, Brianna Artero, Gianna Gibson and Fanghella was also fifth (49.69), just .29 seconds behind fourth-place Huntsville.
In Wednesday’s field events, Lake Creek had four area qualifiers.
Senior Maria Ceballos pole vaulted a personal record 11-even for third place. She was also third place last year in the district meet. Senior Lucy DeWolf finished fourth, qualifying for area for the first time since 2023 after enduring a foot injury last year.
Senior Peyton McKee is going to area for the first time in the high jump. After finishing fifth place year, McKee was second this time at 5-2. Oravainen also qualified for area with a fourth place result.
