The Lake Creek girls track and field had big goals and big dreams going into the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays this weekend.
Those big goals and big dreams were met with the full hearts of those Lions.
Run a sub-1:40 4X200? It happened twice.
Maintain the crown as the No. 1 SMR in the country while breaking more records? That also happened.
Pole vault in one of the most – if not the most – prestigious track meets in Texas (that isn’t the UIL Championship)? Lake Creek’s queen of the pole vault did just that.
Lake Creek had a remarkable Friday and Saturday at Michael A. Myers Stadium.
The 4X200 team of Ashlynn England, Jada Oravainen, Maggie Ogorchock and Sydney Spikerman just keep smashing the school record in the relay.
On Saturday in the Division II final, the quartet went 1:38.79, besting the sub-1:40 time it ran 24 hours earlier in the preliminary. The Lions finished in fifth place overall as Allen took the event in 1:35.79.
On Friday, England, Oravainen, Ogorchock and Spikerman went 1:39.81 for their first-ever sub-1:40 time. Their eighth place time in preliminaries qualified them for the championship meet.
The Lake Creek 4X200 mark has been broken five times this season. The four went 1:40.22 at the Texas A&M Bluebonnet Relays earlier this month. Prior to that, they ran a 1:40.30 at College Station’s meet and 1:43.21 at Cypress Ranch’s meet.
Shortly after the 4X200 qualifier, the Lions sprint medley relay of Ogorchock, Spikerman, Addie Micklos and Hailey Johnson put on a show.
The four maintained its position as No. 1 SMR in the country with a gold medal time of 3:54.96, a new school record and a new Texas Relays record, breaking a mark set in 2018.
The time was faster than Long Beach Wilson, which came in second in 3:56.22 and St. John’s College, which was third in 3:57.86.
The previous meet record was set by McKinney North, a time of 3:55.21.
Earlier on Friday, Ogorchock and Spikerman ran in the Division II 100.
Ogorchock came in 17th (12.17) while Spikerman was 21st (12.23). Sixty-two runners competed in the event.
Lake Creek senior Lucy DeWolf competed in the Pole Vault B event Saturday morning. DeWolf, the Lake Creek school record holder at 11-8, topped at 11-1¼ for an eighth place finish overall in her very first Texas Relays. DeWolf had an injured foot during her junior season.
