Magnolia DL Josh Garner named 15-6A Defensive MVP; 19 Bulldogs recognized

Magnolia was the home of the top District 15-6A defensive player in 2024.

Senior defensive lineman Josh Garner was recognized on Monday as the district’s Defensive Most Valuable Player as the league released its end-of-season awards.

Magnolia finished 5-5 on the year and 4-4 in league play. With the season complete, the Bulldogs were recognized with six first-team selections, seven second-team selections and seven made the honorable mention list.

District 15-6A’s last playoff team – Klein Collins – was eliminated in the Region II (Div. II) semifinals on Saturday against Longview. Tomball and Klein Cain shared the district championship and Klein Oak also made the playoffs.

Garner was dominant at times for the Bulldogs as he totale seven sacks on the season. He also forced two fumbles, had an interception and scored a touchdown. Garner had his hands on 25 tackles with 18 coming for a loss. He pressured the quarterback 18 times and also blocked a kick on special teams.

Klein Oak senior and Oklahoma commit Courtland Guillory, who provided on both offense and defense for the Panthers, was recognized as the district Most Valuable Player.

Klein Cain senior Max Hendrick, a wide receiver, was Offensive MVP.

The Special Teams Player of the Year was Tomball senior kicker Gage Villareal and the Utility Player of the Year was Torrey Paul of Klein.

The Newcomers of the Year were Tomball sophomore linebacker Henry Mulliner (Defensive) and Klein Oak freshman running back Micah Rhodes (Offensive).

Dave Handal (Tomball) and James Clancy (Klein Cain) shared the Coach of the Year award.

No surprise, but Magnolia senior Colin Leahey was a first-team selection at running back. Leahey rushed for 1,253 yards and 18 touchdowns (one in each game) and caught four more touchdowns and had 286 yards through the air.

Magnolia’s defense was recognized with four first-team selections. Junior defensive lineman Ayden Johnson, sophomore linebacker Ty Miller, junior linebacker Tyler Covar and junior defensive back Max Lejsek were all recognized.

On special teams, junior Gavin Gonzales was first-team punter and he also claimed second-team kicker.

Magnolia junior Aiden Hime represented the offensive line on the second team. Sophomore running back Cash Ferrell and junior tight end Carson Smith also made second team.

On second team defense were junior lineman Demond Perrino, senior defensive back Jace Chadwick, senior defensive back Grayson Holcomb.

Earning honorable mention recognition on the Bulldogs were sophomore quarterback Chase Lowery, senior wide receiver Jordan Enyart, senior offensive linemen Anthony Wells and Delsek Zelaya, junior returner Hudson Enyart, senior defensive lineman Aaron Fletcher and junior defensive back Tanner Covar.
