After a fruitful Thursday with two wins, the Magnolia Bulldogs fell to former district nemesis Brenham 8-2 on Friday and then tied Class 5A power Friendswood 3-3 to conclude their schedule at the Brenham Tournament.
Magnolia (9-4-1) went 2-1-1 overall over two days.
Magnolia led 2-0 through two innings against the Cubs. Brenham then scored three in the third and five more over the next two innings.
Keegan Chavez hit a solo homer for Magnolia and Karson Dupre was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Jordan Enyart also had two hits.
Magnolia and Friendswood played four scoreless innings until Magnolia scored twice in the top of the fifth. The Mustangs matched that to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Magnolia briefly took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth before Friendswood once again tied it in the bottom of the inning.
The game was called on the time limit after seven innings were complete.
Enyart had another solid game at the plate as the senior was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Jhett Bubke had the other RBI. Jacob Hunter was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Eli Holseth was 1-for-3 with a double.
Gavin Garcia went 4⅓ innings with two earned runs allowed on two hits and a walk. He struck out two. Wilcox went 2⅔ inning with one unearned run allowed. He allowed three hits and walked five with one strikeout.
Magnolia returns to District 15-6A play on Tuesday and begins a two-game series with Tomball Memorial. The Wildcats host the opener at 7 p.m. before Magnolia hosts Thursday at the same time.
Thursday’s games
Magnolia started the tournament very strong with an 11-1 (5 inn.) win over Willis followed by a grind-it-out 3-2 win over St. Thomas.
Magnolia climbed up 4-0 in the first inning against the Wildkats and didn’t look back.
Ian Pugh homered and totaled three runs and two RBIs. Chavez went 2-for-2 – both doubles – with a team-high four RBIs. Zach Love was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI.
Chase Lowery tripled and drove in a run. Clyde Williams and Enyart both doubled.
Luscombe pitched five innings with one unearned run allowed on three hits. He struck out five.
Braylon Hobbie and Jacob Neely combined on 10 strikeouts in the win over St. Thomas.
Hobbie went 4⅓ innings with six strikeouts. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits. Neely went the rest of the way with four strikeouts, one hit and one walk.
Williams provided the decisive two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to bring in Michael McCullough and take the one-run lead.
Magnolia had just one other hit – a single by William Bates.
