School record 4X200 relay highlights Lake Creek outdoor opener

As the Lake Creek girls track and field team took the season outdoors for the first time the year, the 4X200 relay made an instant statement.

Running in the Cypress Ranch Mustang Relays on Friday, the quartet of Ashlynn England, Jade Oravainen, Maggie Ogorchock and Sydney Spikerman ran a blazing 1:43.21 in a heated field for a silver medal and a school record.

The 16 points earned in that race helped the Lions to a fourth place finish with 74 points out of the 14 team field composed of mostly Class 6A teams. The Lions were the top performing 5A team, just 11 points behind the host Mustangs (85 points) and 13 ahead of Cypress Woods (51). Shadow Creek won with 154 points while Pearland was second with 102.

The 4X200 was an intense finish as the Lions finished just over a second behind Pearland (1:42.16) and just .66 ahead of Shadow Creek (1:43.87). England, Oravainen, Ogorchock and Spikerman nearly beat the old school record of 1:45.03 by two seconds.

In total, Lake Creek had five individual medals won and four fourth place finishes.

Distance runner Hailey Johnson, a recent signee to Oklahoma State, finished first in the 800 (2:13.16) and first in the 1,600 (5:21.57).

It was a quality day all together for the Lions distance runners as Addie Micklos took silver in the 800 (2:15.30) and Frankie Knox was fourth (2:27.28).

Brooke Marshall started the morning with a 3,200 silver medal in 11:51.73. She later finished third in the 1,600 in 5:27.19. Knox finished four for the second time on the day in 5:30.65.

Micklos, meanwhile, finished fourth in a close 400 final. She crossed at 59.67, just behind Shadow Creek’s McKenzi Roberson in 58.22.

Lake Creek’s best finish in field events came in the high jump as Peyton McKee finished tied for fourth with a 5-0 even leap.

Lake Creek’s next varsity meet is next Friday at the Tomball Memorial Relays.
