This week in Conroe basketball (Jan. 5-11)

After jumping back into the District 13-6A season this past Saturday with a victory over Caney Creek, the Conroe Tigers look ahead to a big road contest Wednesday to begin the second round.

Conroe (11-8, 4-4) travels to The Woodlands (15-9, 6-2) for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off Wednesday night in a rematch of a tightly-contested game back in November between the two.

The Tigers then continue on to Saturday from there where they will host last place Cleveland (0-23, 0-8) at 12:30 p.m.

Against Caney Creek, the Tigers put on a strong defense effort and pulled away late to a 42-25 win after outscoring the Panthers 16-4 in the final quarter.

Conroe forced 31 turnovers, had 14 steals and blocked four shots in the win as Caney Creek shot 8-for-32 from the floor. Senior Alisa Sneed not only led in scoring with nine points, but she also added a team-high three steals. Damiri Anerson, Carly Boothe, Kayleigh Phillips and Riley Gross had two steals apiece.

Against The Woodlands, winners of five straight including a 54-25 throttling of New Caney on Saturday, the Tigers will need to clean up their offensive game, especially underneath the hoop.

Conroe shot 18-for-49 on 2-pointers against the Panthers, not taking advantage to the full extent of the 16 offensive rebounds (led by freshman Christy Rogers’ six) it totaled.

The Woodlands enters the week in third place in the district standings and hasn’t lost since a 10-point decision to rival College Park on Dec. 20. Unlike the Tigers who idled during Christmas break, the Highlanders won the Brazosport ISD Holiday Classic. The Woodlands defeated Columbia, Victoria West, Friendswood and then Angleton for the trophy.

The Highlanders won the first game on Nov. 22 as Conroe struggled around the rim. The Tigers led that night by three points with over six minutes to play for The Woodlands raced to 9-0 run and finished off for the 39-35 win.

Nine Tigers scored points that night with Phillips leading with eight. Junior Isa Alainiz had 16 for The Woodlands while Aiden Pino added nine.

The Highlanders have won two straight in the series with Conroe’s last victory coming in December 2023.

As for Cleveland, Conroe beat the Indians 66-20 the last time the teams met on Dec. 13. In three of four Conroe district wins, the Tigers have held opponents to 25 or less.

In that contest, Conroe outscored the Indians 29-2 in the second quarter for a 38-8 lead at halftime. The trio of Taylor Smith (20 points, four rebounds), Gross (15 points, five rebounds) and Rogers (15 points, six rebounds) dominated in the post. Senior Saterria Poehlein had six of the Tigers’ 23 steals that night.

Cleveland has dropped 57 consecutive games dating back to January 2023.
