Excitement is reverberating through the Dayton Broncos baseball program as we enter the final month of the season.
But head coach Matt Moore’s squad knows there is plenty more to do.
The Broncos come off a massive week after sweeping perennial playoff contender Porter with superb pitching performances by Hunter Wallace in a 4-1 win Tuesday night and by Sebastian Avila in a 5-2 win Saturday afternoon. It was a huge positive as the Spartans swept Dayton last year in a pair of close games.
Dayton (10-11, 3-1) is on its longest winning streak in recent memory – five games – and matched last year’s overall win total with Saturday’s win. The Broncos are tied with Kingwood Park (17-6-1, 3-1) for first.
This week, the Broncos turn their focus to a series with Splendora. Dayton hosts the Wildcats Tuesday night and travels to Splendora on Friday.
Wallace was incredible in earning his first district win of the season Tuesday night. The junior righty brought a perfect game into the fourth inning and finished the complete game four-hitter with one unearned run allowed with seven strikeouts and two walks. He also provided the biggest hit of the night – a two-run opposite field triple to right in the first inning.
On Saturday, Avila worked a complete-game three-hitter with one earned run allowed. He struck out five with two walks. Kyler Moreau starred at the plate with a 3-for-4 day, including a double. Anthony Zuniga and Luke Ressler each had an RBI.
Splendora (13-6, 4-2) starts this week in third place, but the WIldcats have lost two of three. It split with West Fork last week, winning 5-4 on Tuesday and losing 4-3 on Friday. Five of six Splendora district games have been decided by two runs or less.
As Splendora moved up to 5A this year, this is the first meeting between the Wildcats and Dayton since 2018. The Broncos have won four of the last six meetings.
