This week in Deer Park softball (March 16-22)

It won’t quite top those three state championships. Nothing will.

But it certainly was a proud and memorable week for the Deer Park Deer.

On Tuesday, Deer Park scored the most runs in a game in this era as it pummeled Clear Brook 24-7.

Three nights later, freshman Journey Calderon provided the Deer their biggest moment of the 2025 season to date as she capped a five-run seventh inning with a two-run homer to knock off Clear Lake 7-5.

Deer Park (14-4, 4-0) won’t rest on those memories and moments as this week presents two massive challenges.

Brazoswood (9-10, 1-3) comes to town Tuesday night before Clear Springs (12-2, 4-0) arrives Friday for a possible game for sole possession first place in District 24-6A.

Deer Park, assuredly, will not be looking past the Buccaneers first. Brazoswood might be below .500, but its a team that went 31-9 last year and reached the Region III-6A semifinals where it put up a fight against Katy.

Brazoswood fell 13-2 to Clear Springs and 8-7 to Dickinson last week.

The Chargers, meanwhile, are on a seven-game winning streak and pulverized Brazoswood (13-2) and Clear Falls (17-3) last week. Clear Springs, which hosts Dickinson Tuesday night, has outscored district opponents 56-18 so far.

Deer Park and Brazoswood might be new district opponents to this alignment, but their history is deep. The teams have met in the playoffs five times since 2013. The Deer also beat the Buccaneers 2-1 in February 2024 as Aleena Carrizales doubled and had an RBI.

Deer Park and Clear Springs haven’t met since 2021, a regional championship series the Deer won en route to their most recent state title.

Back to last week to wrap this up.

The Deer scored 17 runs over the final two innings against Clear Brook. Mia Montemayor homered, doubled and drove in four RBIs. Calderon had a double, triple and five RBIs while Caitlyn Wade had four RBIs.

Deer Park scored all seven of its runs against Clear Lake over the final two innings. The Deer trailed 5-2 entering the final frame where Calderon smacked the two-run homer and finished 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs. Montemayor had a pivotal two-run double to tie the game in the seventh.

Braelynn Jones picked up the win in relief. She allowed two unearned runs in 1⅔ innings with three strikeouts. Madi Alvarado kept Deer Park in contention through 5⅓ innings with one earned run allowed and four strikeouts.
