Deer Park is back on the road Tuesday after an eventful homestand last week.
The Deer went 1-1 with their first district loss since 2020, 6-2, against Brazoswood Tuesday night.
On Friday night, Deer Park made a statement in beating District 24-6A first-place Clear Springs 5-2.
The Deer (15-5, 4-1), winners of 10 of their last 11, hit the road this Tuesday for the first time since March 11. The first round of district play wraps up at Dickinson (6-13, 3-3) before the Deer return home Friday to play Clear Falls (5-10, 1-4).
A consistent factor for the Deer last week was pitching. While Deer Park allowed eight runs over the two games, just three of those runs were earned. Temple Junior College recruit Madi Alvarado set the table for Texas Tech commit Braelynn Jones in both games last week.
Alvarado went 5⅓ innings with one earned run on three hits. She struck out three, all against Brazoswood. Jones went 8⅔ innings with five hits, two earned runs allowed and 13 strikeouts.
In the Clear Springs game, Caitlyn Wade set the tone with a pair of RBIs in the first inning. Camryn Plocheck added an RBI and Mariah Ramirez was 2-for-3.
Dickinson has alternated wins and losses for the past month. Most recently, the Gators defeated Clear Falls 6-4 Friday night as it rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh. Dickinson dropped an 8-5 game at Clear Springs last Tuesday.
Deer Park and Dickinson have met as non-district opponents every year since 2021. Last year, the Deer won 4-1 as Jones struck out six over five innings with just two hits allowed. Plocheck had one of the team’s three RBIs.
As the page turns to the second round of district play, Clear Falls is in town for a rematch Friday night after a 12-1 loss on March 4.
Alvarado didn’t surrender a hit in five innings against the Knights while striking out two and giving up one earned run. Journey Calderon homered and had a game-high three RBIs. Mia Montemayor doubled and had two RBIs. Plocheck also drove in two runs.
