This week in Grand Oaks softball (March 23-29)

NOTE: The postponed Humble ISD Tournament from February is set to commence this Thursday and Saturday. Grand Oaks’ schedule is listed below. For the purpose of this article, we will focus only on this week’s district games.

After a spring break shake up cost the Grizzlies a couple games in the District 13-6A standings, Grand Oaks made two gigantic steps forward in getting back in the playoff picture as the season shifts to the second round of district play.

Grand Oaks beat Willis on a walk-off hit Friday night and then dominated Caney Creek Saturday afternoon to move into fourth place heading into this week.

The Grizzlies (15-5, 5-3) travels to The Woodlands (10-7, 4-4) Tuesday and hosts Cleveland (5-17, 0-8) Friday.

Ava Butler played hero with an eighth-inning single to lift Grand Oaks to a 5-4 win over Willis. Kiley Milligan and Larissa Tavares each doubled that night. Milligan had an RBI, as did Ella Brown.

Victoria Hernandez went 7 ⅓ innings with four earned runs allowed. She struck out two and allowed eight hits. Kat Mack was the winning pitcher in relief.

Grand Oaks then scored 11 runs for the second time in three games as it totaled that in a shutout of Caney Creek. Milligan had a team-best three RBIs. Butler was 2-for-3 (double, triple) with three runs. Kaitlynn Torres was 3-for-3 (double, triple) with two RBIs. Butler, Tavares and Mayce Burkett each had an RBI.

Torres pitched three scoreless innings with five strikeouts and one hit. Mack went the final two innings with one hit and one strikeout.

Grand Oaks started district play way back on Feb. 17 with a 16-2 home win over The Woodlands. Amir Abukhzam doubled twice and had a team-high five RBIs that night. Milligan (two doubles), Torres and Burkett had three RBIs apiece. Torres went four innings with two earned runs allowed on three hits for the win. She struck out two.

The Highlanders dropped all three of their games last week, all in lopsided fashion. New Caney won 11-0, Conroe 15-2 and Oak Ridge 19-4. That came off a four-game winning streak by The Woodlands.

Cleveland has been outscored 79-5 in district play so far.

Back on Feb. 25, Grand Oaks beat the Indians 11-1. Abukhzam had three RBIs that night while Milligan, Burkett and Alexis Kennedy each had two. Milligan doubled twice.

Mack pitched three innings and didn’t allow a Cleveland hit. She struck out one. Hernandez went the final four innings with one earned run allowed on three hits with six strikeouts.
