This week in Grand Oaks softball (March 30-April 5)

As the Humble ISD Tournament commenced on Saturday, the Grand Oaks Grizzlies had their hands full with a couple state-ranked teams from the school district.

The Grizzlies put up and admirable effort, but fell 5-4 to No. 20 Summer Creek and 7-6 to No. 2 Atascocita.

Grand Oaks (18-7, 7-3) concluded the week 3-2 after defeating The Woodlands 8-4 in District 13-6A on Tuesday, followed by a 6-0 win over Cleveland on Friday. The Grizzlies beat College Station 4-3 on Saturday to start the Humble ISD Tournament.

Summer Creek won Saturday’s opener in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly. Grand Oaks had just tied the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Ella Brown. Kiley Milligan and Mayce Burkett each homered. Milligan was 2-for-2 with a team-high two RBIs. Burkett’s was a solo shot. Lilo Wright provided a double. Grizzlies pitching combined on six hits and eight walks.

Atascocita rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth on four consecutive RBI producing at-bats. The teams were tied 3-3 after three innings before Grand Oaks took a 6-3 lead in the top of the fifth as Milligan scored on a wild pitch and two runs scored on a sacrifice fly by Jaz Leveston, one of those runs being on an error. Leveston was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Milligan scored two runs. Logan Bevil pitched five innings with three earned runs allowed on five hits. Kat Mack pitched the final inning.

This week, Grand Oaks travels to College Park (10-13, 3-7) Tuesday night and hosts New Caney (15-9-1, 6-3) Friday night.

College Park dropped games against Conroe (14-0) and Oak Ridge (17-7) last week.

Back on March 4, the Grizzlies capped a 3-1 win over the Cavaliers on a play at the plate as Milligan threw the perfect ball home to Burkett, who applied the tag to end the game.

Victoria Hernandez had a massive first varsity start in a district game as freshman as she logged the complete game with one earned run allowed on four hits. She struck out three and walked five. Brown, Leveston and Veilleux each had RBIs.

New Caney lost 4-0 to Conroe in its lone game last week. The Eagles totaled just three hits.

New Caney edged Grand Oaks in a home game back on March 7. The Grizzlies scratched two runs across in the top of the seventh before the rally was cut short. Torres, Milligan and Brown had RBIs that night. Torres and Mack split time in the circle as the Grizzlies allowed just one earned run after making two errors.
