This week in Kingwood softball (March 23-29)

NOTE: The postponed Humble ISD Tournament from February is set to commence this Thursday and Saturday. Kingwood’s schedule is listed below. For the purpose of this article, we will focus only on this week’s district games.

It’s been a challenging stretch of games, but the Kingwood Mustangs ended last week on a positive note.

Tuesday saw Kingwood drop a district game – 6-2 at C.E. King – for the first time since 2023, but the Mustangs responded with a 4-3 win over Summer Creek on Friday.

Kingwood (15-2-1, 5-1) wraps up the first round of district play this Tuesday at Humble (5-15, 1-5) before returning home Friday to play Goose Creek Memorial (17-6, 3-3).

It was a forgettable night at King as the Mustangs give up five runs in the first two innings, made three errors in the field and couldn’t do much with their nine hits. Mia Gagliardi and Samantha Trzecki each had an RBI while Leilani Garcia tripled on a 2-for-4 night.

Kingwood leaned on ace Hunter Quentel against Summer Creek as the sophomore kept the Bulldogs at bay until allowing three unearned runs in the sixth inning after an error extended the inning. Quentel struck out 12 and gave up four hits and three walks.

For the second straight Friday, Gagliardi went yard at her home field. Addyson Sheppard doubled and had two RBIs while Garcia also drove in a run.

Humble has had a rough go of it in district play as it has allowed 85 runs, an average of 14.2 per game. Dating back to 2008, Kingwood is 14-0 against Humble. It won both games last year by a combined score of 27-1.

The GCM game is a rematch of March 4, in which the Mustangs won 15-0 in four innings. Kingwood hit five homers that night with Garcia mashing two of them with four RBIs. Sheppard, Quentel and Trzecki also homered. Sheppard and Trzecki totaled three RBIs apiece while Quentel had two.

Quentel didn’t allow a hit in the circle with seven strikeouts and two walks.
