This week in Kingwood softball (March 30-April 5)

No. 15 Kingwood went to work last week with five games completed and a 4-1 record.

The Mustangs won both District 23-6A games – 14-0 at Humble and 11-0 against Goose Creek Memorial – and were 2-1 during the Humble ISD Tournament on Thursday and Saturday.

The Mustangs beat College Station 9-1 Thursday, Liberty 5-4 on Saturday before falling 3-0 to 5A power Lake Creek to snap a five-game winning streak.

Against Liberty, Leilani Garcia jacked two home runs for Kingwood (19-3-1, 7-1) and Mia Gagliardi knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the fourth. Garcia totaled four RBIs and the pair combined on the Mustangs’ three hits. Frei Pizarro allowed four earned runs over four innings. She gave up four hits and three walks while striking out two. Lyndsie Gilman stranded two runs in a scoreless fifth inning.

Kingwood was no-hit by the Lions (22-0) , ranked No. 2 in Class 5A. Sara Wiggins went all five innings with two strikeouts. For Kingwood, Hunter Quentel pitched 3⅓ innings with one earned run allowed. She struck out three, walked four and gave up three hits. Gilman pitched another scoreless innings at the end with one hit allowed.

This week, Kingwood travels to North Shore (7-10, 3-5) on Friday and hosts Channelview (1-8, 0-8) on Friday. 

North Shore beat Humble 11-0 on Friday and lost 3-2 to Summer Creek earlier in the week.

Kingwood beat the Mustangs 4-1 on March 7. Garcia, Gagliardi, McKenna Holm and Abella Mata each had an RBI while Gilman struck out seven in a complete-game two-hitter.

The last time out against Channelview on March 11 was a wild one. Kingwood hit four homers and totaled seven more extra-base hits in an 18-0 win. Addyson Sheppard, Quentel, Kendall Yates and Gagliardi all homered. Quentel added two doubles. Garcia had two doubles and a triple. Sheppard led in RBIs with five. Pizarro and Yates – at 2 innings apiece – combined on a no-hitter. Pizarro struck out five.
