This week in Magnolia baseball (March 30-April 5)

Magnolia had its first big dose of adversity last week, but still came out on top when all was said and done.

The Bulldogs were swept by Klein Cain Tuesday and Friday – the first multi-game losing streak of the season – but came out with an 11-2 win over Klein Forest on Saturday to cap the week 1-2.

Magnolia (12-6-1, 5-2) begins this week tied for first place in District 15-6A. The Bulldogs and defending state champs Tomball lead the pack. Surely Magnolia won’t rest on that notion as Klein Cain is a half-game back, Klein Oak and Klein Collins are both a full game back, Magnolia West is 1½ games back and Klein is two games back.

It will be a wild final month for this district.

Magnolia completes its season series with Klein Forest at home Tuesday night. The Bulldogs then begin a new series with – at home once again – versus Klein Collins Friday night.

The Hurricanes won the weekday games by a combined score of 13-5. Magnolia combined on 12 hits in those games, but gave up 23.

Against Klein Forest, it took Magnolia some time to get going. But once it did, the Bulldogs produced five runs in the fifth and five more in the seventh to pull away.

Keegan Chavez was 2-for-3 with a homer and a double and three RBIs. Chase Lowery was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Jordan Enyart doubled and drove in a run. Gavin Garcia made his first district start and lasted three innings with two earned runs and two hits with three strikeouts before he handed the ball to Braylon Hobbie, who struck out four in four shutout innings. He gave up two hits.

Klein Forest (3-15-1, 0-9) have dropped eight straight games and have scored just eight runs in nine district games.

Klein Collins (10-10-1, 5-4) are tied for fourth place and have won four of five after starting district play 1-3. Last week, the Tigers split a series with Klein Oak with the win coming Tuesday night. On Saturday afternoon, Klein Collins scored a season-high in runs with a 15-4 win over Tomball Memorial. The Tigers play the Wildcats again Tuesday night.
