Week 9 football preview capsule: Magnolia at Tomball

Magnolia (4-3, 3-2) at Tomball (7-0, 5-0)

The details: 7 p.m. Friday, Tomball ISD Stadium
History: This will be the 13th meeting between the neighboring schools since 2004. The Bulldogs and Cougars have met on and off as district foes over the years. The last two years they met in non-district play with Magnolia winning both meetings, including 27-7 last year.

Key player for Magnolia: We’ll go with a couple receivers who played well against Klein Collins last week. Ian Slocum caught a touchdown pass while Jordan Enyart caught four passes for 62 yards.

Key player for Tomball: Senior running back Oswaldo Morales has had himself a year. A leader on offense for the Cougars, Morales has 1,260 rushing yards, has reached 100-plus yards in all seven games and has reached the end zone 14 times.

Stat attack: Magnolia and Tomball have played some absurd games, especially in the past decade. The Bulldogs are averaging 46.7 points per game in the past eight meetings dating back to 2014, including 75 points scored in the 2016 meeting.

Notable: Tomball is off to its best start since 2021 when it won six games … The Cougars are in the driver’s seat for the District 15-6A title at the moment … Their last district title came in 1988 … Magnolia senior back Colin Leahey reached the end zone last week against Klein Collins for his 13th of the season … Leahey has scored in every game this year … Sophomore Cash Ferrell continues to amaze as an offensive weapon as he scored on run and completed a 43-yard pass … Senior defensive back Aiyhden Noland had a breakout game of sorts with nine tackles … Junior linebacker Tyler Covar was part of 13 tackles (five solo) and broke up a pass … Magnolia is 3-0 on the road this season and have already won at Tomball ISD Stadium (Sept. 20 against Tomball Memorial).
